Community News Scholarship Fund

Every year for at least the past 4 years, CLIC has donated to the Community News Scholarship Fund as a way of giving back to the Community.  We can think of no better way to support both our youth and the value of simple but powerful volunteerism.

In their “Thank You” posted in the Community News, the Scholarship Fund notes:

"This fund was created to honor the memory of three women - Dianne Morse, Jackie Allen and Janette Springer - who each played a meaningful role in shaping life here in our corner of Maine.  Through their work in local news and community service, they showed us what it means to care deeply about the people and place you call home.

The scholarship fund carries that same spirit forward.  Each gift is a reflection of shared values:  belief in hard work, pride in our local school and a willingness to give so that others might have a better chance.  Even in a small town - and maybe especially in a small town - that kind of giving matters.

When folks come together to support something like this, it’s about more than the dollars raised.  It’s about tradition, memory, and connection.  Many of us still remember our own school days, the teachers who made a difference, and the classmates who went on to do good things.  Supporting this fund is one way to honor that shared past while quietly investing in what’s to come - even if we never see the results firsthand.  That’s the nature of true community spirit.

It’s not about the number of applicants or the size of the awards.  It’s about coming together, year after year, to say that what we’ve built here matters.  That our young people, whether they stay or go, carry a piece of this place with them.  And that the memory of those we’ve lost continues to inspire acts of kindness and purpose.

We are grateful to the individuals and organizations who made contributions this year.  Your names appear alongside this article as a simple way to say:  “thank you”.  Your generosity does not go unnoticed.

As always, if you’d like to learn more about the scholarship or become involved in future efforts, feel free to reach out to Christiana at clord@sunrisecountry.org.

Community is more than geography.  It’s what we choose to do for one another.  Thank you for choosing to give.

Thank You

CLIC-NIC Tables

For a number of years now, CLIC has purchased picnic tables for use at Half Moon Island and Mud Lake Falls.  As is often the case, the initial purchase is just the beginning.  Somehow these tables need to get to their designated location (an Island! Or a beautiful spot located in a fairly backwoods area!) and the tables need to be maintained over the course of their life and removed once they are no longer fixable and safe.  This humble work is important, heavy and often left to the same few tireless volunteers.  Please consider volunteering your elbow grease with CLIC - you will make some new friends, help with a great cause, get some exercise and improve our environment - all with one CLIC!

(A brief public service announcement!  The picnic tables are in these locations for your enjoyment and we want you to use them to their fullest.  We do ask however, that if you move them into the water, please remember to put them safely back on shore when you are done!  This will help keep our tables in better condition for longer and enable more people to use and enjoy them.)

VIVA LA CLIC-NIC TABLES!!

More Elbow Grease:

Every Spring and Fall and sometimes in between, there is a plethora of clean up jobs that need to be done around our lakes and streams.  Hip waders may be needed!  Boots may sink into the mud!  Bugs may bite and scratches and dirt will happen.  BUT…these are all badges of honour in the service of our beautiful CLIC environment.  Every year, streams and fish pathways need to be cleared, trails and picnic areas need to be maintained and projects need to gear up.

Please consider Volunteering your elbow grease with CLIC - you will make some new friends, help with a great cause, get some exercise and improve our environment - all with one CLIC!

Brain Grease (is that a thing?)

As you have seen on this site, CLIC HAS ISSUES!  The Forest City Dam has been our biggest and most concerning issue to date but there are always issues that float to the surface.  David Townsend, Past President of CLIC and virtually the one man member that is called the “Forest City Dam Committee”, has donated untold hours and hours of his time and regulatory expertise to ensuring that his people, the people of the Chiputneticook Lakes, were represented in the fight to save the Forest City Dam.

It is hard to express just how much we owe to David.  Tireless research on the issues involved, hours and hours in front of a computer writing detailed, accurate and lengthy submission after submission in this seemingly never ending, 8+ year-long battle.  You will note however, that we are hopeful that this battle may very well be coming to an end - and this ending, should everything pan out as it appears it will, will be a happy one.  CLIC has been well served indeed by Mr. David Townsend.  If you run into David over the course of your day, please give him a high five, a hearty handshake and of course, your deepest thanks and appreciation.

As you can see, CLIC has many irons in the fire and is always looking for more people willing to give of their time and talents.  To this end, please consider Volunteering your elbow and/or brain grease with CLIC - you will make some new friends, help with a great cause, get some exercise- mentally or physically, and improve our environment - all with one CLIC!
